Abstract

For the last 20 years, Taiwan has created an “economic miracle”. However, the pursuit of economic development has sacrificed part of our living environment. Now environmental protection has become an urgent issue. However, the working plans formulated by the central government do not work very well. The performance is not as expected. Some of the problems encountered are the same as in the developed countries and some of them are local and unique.

This study was done to probe the problems of waste handling and recycling problems in Taiwan under the drive of personal working experience and social responsibility. It is hoped to learn the related experience from the advanced countries with similar living environments, tradition and cultural background. It was expected that the Japanese experience in waste handling and recycling can enlighten and enable the researchers to provide useful suggestions for the reference of all levels of governments.
