Abstract/Description

According to the Mental Health Association of New York City, “5-6% of American adults have a serious mental illness; about 2% have disorders that are long-term and disabling, contributing to very high rates of unemployment and poor living conditions.” My experience with Bipolar Disorder from instilled a personal mission for me to educate others and spread awareness about the importance of self-care and lessening the stigma around those who suffer from mental health disorders such as mine. Learning how to accept being neuro-atypical in a society governed by neurotypical standards has led to the development of a successful Instagram account that effectively combined my personal message and beliefs to create a marketable social media image. For almost a year, I have been working on growing my own brand by collaborating with other social media influencers who share my common interest in yoga. Throughout this time, I have been able to observe the dynamics of social capital in this social media platform and have developed an organized system to communicate between sponsoring companies and participating influencers to form effective digital marketing events that benefit all parties involved. Using this marketing experience and the system I have created, I am constructing a fundraising event that will help raise money and create outreach over the digital community I have familiarized myself with on Instagram. This fundraising event is the culmination of my social media branding efforts thus far, and incorporate all of the psychological, social media and marketing research and implementation that has led me to this success.

Key Words:Bipolar & Being neuro-atypical, Social Media Activism/Outreach, Branding, Social Media Marketing/Digital Marketing, Fundraising, Social Capital
