Abstract/Description
Teachers often want to create a safe space for students in their classroom. One of the biggest ways educators can create an environment where students feel confident expressing themselves is by allowing students to express themselves in ways that might go against how society views their gender through gender norms or stereotypes.
One researcher has found that professional development with a group of teachers, on gender bias in technology instruction. The result of this research revealed that teachers who were exposed to gender equity professional development training sessions, were more likely to demonstrate gender equitable teaching behaviors (Luongo, 2012). Another case study utilized naturalistic inquiry: inductive, deductive, and thematic analyses were conducted using an analytic approach. Findings showed that Title IX and gender equity training for teachers was inconsistent (Grossman, 2009).
This study will address one question: What methods and strategies do teachers implement in order to create a gender inclusive classroom environment? The purpose of this study is to observe what methods and strategies teachers implement in order to create a gender inclusive classroom environment. During this study, the researcher will observe specifically the teachers encouragement around self-expression, pronoun choice, and language used in the classroom by the teacher. The research methodology used in order to conduct this study includes observing two
teachers at one school in the Bay Area. Due to this research being on-going, data will also be collected through classroom observations during my fieldwork hours this semester. The researcher anticipates the results to be that the teacher will create an environment with unbiased language regarding gender in the classroom.
