Abstract

The economic growth of Marysville from 1851 to 1859 forms an interesting chapter in the development of California. The discovery of gold along the Yuba and Feather rivers brought an influx Of miners into the Northern Sierra Nevada and their need for supplies gave rise to a trading settlement at the spot where the Yuba joins the Feather. The development of Marysville as a mining base town and then as an agricultural center provides an interesting study of the mining frontier in California.
