Abstract

The passage of Proposition 227 in California in 1998 ended bilingual education. In its place, teachers had to come up with ways to teach second language learners. This study examined teacher perception of the influence of homogeneous and heterogeneous grouping of ESL students’ on their ability to learn English. Four teachers were interviewed, comparing their perception of the previous year’s student population in a homogeneous setting, with the current year’s students in a heterogeneous setting. Responses indicated that their perception of student success in learning English were mixed.
