Abstract

A challenge curriculum will be implemented into a heterogeneous ninth grade English class. The independent study curriculum is designed to provide a challenging experience for above-average students within the heterogeneous class helping them heighten their critical thinking skills. A group of qualified volunteers will complete the assignments and in turn teach the other class mates what they learned. Students will gain a richer understanding of the subject in the process. Upon completion, a program evaluation survey and follow-up interview are required of the participants and teachers. The survey and follow-up interviews will be used to assess and. evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the Challenge Curriculum.
