The Lack of Filipino Representation in American Television

Abstract/Description

The purpose of this paper is to research and then identify why there is a lack of Filipino representation in American television. The paper covers the topic of stereotypes—how they emerged, why they are present, and the types that are attached to Asian Americans. Other platforms for stereotypes to appear such as reality television and advertising are discussed. The possible reasons behind why there is an underrepresentation of Asian Americans in American television is explored. The term ethnic self-awareness is covered in regards to the topic of representation. This paper also delves into how Asian Americans struggle to find and obtain acting roles. Content analysis is used as the methodology to further identify and categorize the kinds of stereotypes displayed in American shows. The three modern-day American sitcoms used are Superstore, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Fresh Off The Boat. They are analyzed for the stereotypes that are showcased and how the Asian American characters are portrayed. The findings revealed that a multitude of Asian American actors have numerous stereotypes, which make it difficult to be casted as a character different than what is expected of his or her culture. Additionally, the three shows disclosed the various ways Asian Americans and more specifically Filipinos, are portrayed in American television.
