Abstract/Description
In my project, I will be exploring the divide between division 1, and lower division college athletics. To do this, I will break down two college programs that I am very familiar with, and focus on them. One of the programs is a major division one athletic program; the other is a lower division program. I will start by defining the different divisions in college athletics. I will then take a look at the two different programs themselves, and see how they differ. I will be looking at the culture around the programs, how these programs recruit, and the media presence around these two programs. This will show how building a college athletic power is not as easy as getting out on the field and playing. There are many other things that must be done for a program to achieve its goal. My goal is to be able to show how divides form, and how athletic programs rise to power. I will also illustrate how a college team is a brand, and there are assumptions made based on the image that powerful programs have created. I will interview people that are involved in lower division college athletics, and division 1 to investigate their perspectives. Furthermore, I have found athletes on the DU campus that have played in both lower division college athletics here at DU, and have also played in a division 1 program as well. From these findings, I will be able to break down the pros and cons of both types of programs.
