Abstract/Description
Technological devices are consistently evolving to become more efficient and more portable so that the users of these devices can be more connected and entertained. In education, technology is making its way into all subjects and can be used to help supplement lessons and other activities within the classroom. The iPad is one of the many technological devices that has made its way into the classroom and has become a large part of the academic day for students and teachers, especially in mathematics.
Within my study, I looked at what teachers perceive to be the benefits and limitations of iPad usage during mathematics instruction. In order to collect data, I looked at several studies done on iPad usage during mathematics instruction along with other forms of technology that have had positive results. I also conducted interviews of five teachers from Marin County elementary schools.
Results indicated that iPad usage during mathematics instruction does benefit students; however, the current statistical data shows a marginal improvement. It was also found through teacher interviews that iPads, when used to help supplement lessons improve student understanding and help to solidify mathematical concepts through interactive apps. Many teachers stated that the use of iPads allowed auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning at the same time during the use of the iPad. These skills benefited the students overall learning of mathematics.
