A Masochistic Tendency
Abstract/Description
“A Masochistic Tendency” follows Charlie, a twenty-something, self-deprecating, nihilistic narcissist out of a job and living at home. After attempting to commit suicide, she wakes up in a hospital enraged at the realisation of her failure. Her frustration escalates when the hospital refuses to release her, placing her on suicide watch until she becomes “stable”. The sterile atmosphere of hospital living deepens her madness and in retaliation, she attempts to kill herself at every opportunity. But, the staff just won’t let her die. On top of that, Charlie is forced to see an idiot therapist, Ted, who tries to help Charlie “confront” her demons, which, as far as Charlie is concerned, is all she has. Eventually, Charlie realises that the only way out of this hell hole is to cooperate. And yet what began as an outrageous attempt to kill oneself soon becomes an avenue for finding meaning in what seems a meaningless existence.
