Abstract/Description
Human imagination is an amazing tool for the creation of impressive art. For thousands of years, legends and mythology have inspired artists to create fantastic works of art in many forms. As time moved on, more and more these fantastical creatures, scenes, and people were featured in art. These wondrous ideas motivate me to create art. Whether it is the majesty of a dragon or the nobility of Zeus, there is no greater artistic inspiration.
These tales and legends have also inspired my young adult novel, A World Disturbed. This story takes place in the fantastical medieval world called Corinth, and follows a classic hero’s journey. The main character, a young man named Aramir, is forced to confront his strange magical talents, the destruction of all he has known, and a world that isn’t as black and white as he first thought. As civil war wracks Corinth, Aramir fights for his land against the rebels and is forced to choose between right and wrong. The story also follows the adventures of a reckless but kind mage named Estevan, and a bitter and cynical warlock called Nathalia. These characters provide rival and foil for Aramir as their own journeys and development intertwine with each other.
I’ve illustrated scenes from this novel by a combination of drawing and photography. Two illustrations capture melancholic and ominous moments, such as a dark ritual being casted by sinister figures in dark robes, illuminated only by the sickly ritual light. Another scene captures a dramatic view of Nathalia sitting at the edge of a cliff looking sadly at the mist filled valley below. There are also two illustrations that detail the appearance of the main characters Aramir and Nathalia. The last image the collection depicts a small portion of the scene that rendered Aramir homeless. These scenes will be presented in chronological order, starting with the fire, then the figure staring off of a cliff, and lastly the dark ritual. Illustrations of Aramir and Nathalia are presented separately For the conference presentation, I will present a few images and read excerpts from the novel.
