Abstract/Description
The purpose of this project is to create a program that serves not only individuals living with dementia (ILwD), but their caregivers as well. Occupational therapists will utilize the Allen Cognitive Levels (ACLS-5) in order to identify specific remaining abilities, according to the stage of dementia that the individual is currently in. This program strives to create an early-education program that will include educating the caregiver on what to expect regarding their loved one’s current abilities and behaviors, activity modifications and importance of occupational balance for the caregivers. It is essential for caregivers to be educated on the early-stages of dementia in order to provide adequate care when caring for not only the ILwD, but themselves as well. Early education can lead to more effective care and a higher quality of life for caregivers, as well as ILwD.
