Abstract/Description
Vaping Culture Among College Students in the Bay Area: Are there associations between peer pressure, stress relief, and the increase of e-cigarette use?
Abstract
Since the inception of e-cigarettes in 2007, it’s use has grown in popularity among adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the surge in vaping among the adolescent population reached epidemic levels reaching over 2 million current users. The e-cigarette market is flooded with thousands of flavors that make them attractive to younger consumers. Why are e-cigarettes, commonly known as “vapes” by young adults, so popular in today’s culture, and do they have awareness of its potential negative, yet largely unknown, health effects? The goal of this study is to better understand the association between peer pressure and e-cigarette use, and the association between e-cigarettes and stress relief. In order to complete these objectives, a mixed-methods approach, using both qualitative and quantitative analysis, will be used to better understand these determinants of of e-cigarette, or vaping culture.
