Abstract/Description
Language, culture and emotional intelligence are three broad topics that connect as that of a venn diagram. Language is a vital aspect of culture to the point that whether language influences culture or vice versa is debatable, and emotional intelligence and language have a positive correlation for foreign language students. This empirical research study looked at the multilingual influence on an individual’s level of emotional intelligence. Utilizing survey research, this study examined two questions. The first question was, to what extent does knowing more than one language influence a person’s emotional intelligence? The second question was, how does knowing more than one language affect an individual’s attitudes towards different cultures? Reflectively, there were two hypotheses to this study, the first assumed that if a person knows more than one language then he/she will have a higher emotional intelligence score than a person who knows only one language; and the second, if a person knows more than one language, then he/she will have a higher level of cultural sensitivity.
