Abstract
Occupational therapy students have limited exposure to amputees and their prosthesis systems. Access to prosthetic learning resources during the course of occupational therapy education is often restricted to course required textbooks and laboratory demonstrations. The purpose of this project-based thesis is to provide an alternative educational resource for students to gain knowledge in relation to the complexities of limb loss and an amputee’s subsequent use of prosthetic devices. Through the development and use of a prosthesis reference manual, students will have an opportunity to supplement existing educational resources in learning prosthesis related content. These materials were developed through contacting a variety of prosthetic resources and discussions with people who use prosthetic limbs.
The manual will include current and historical information related to prostheses use and development, as well as rehabilitation techniques and therapeutic interventions that may be used by occupational therapists when treating amputee prosthesis users.
