Abstract

Background: Islam is currently the fastest growing religion in the world and the chances of nurses having a Muslim patient is exceptionally high yet many nurses lack the knowledge and resources on how to accurately provide culturally sensitive care to Muslim patients. Hospitals lack educational sessions/training as well as Epic tools to help nurses provide culturally sensitive care to Muslim patients which leads to a knowledge deficit in cultural sensitivity of Islamic beliefs, values, and practices. Purpose: This thesis paper proposes a research design for a nurse education/training program on Islamic beliefs, values, and practices along with an implementation of tips and guides built into Epic. The proposed research is meant to educate nurses and help them provide culturally sensitive care to Muslim patients to bridge the cultural competency gap that is currently an issue. The literature review helps prove the need for educational sessions/training and helpful tools nurses could use to ensure they are respecting their Muslim patients and providing them with high quality care beyond the doctor’s orders.  Design-Method: A quantitative quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test survey design will be used, with at least 100-150 licensed registered nurses. Results: The data collected will be used to compare the nurse’s knowledge on Muslim practices, and whether or not they know how to provide culturally sensitive care to Muslim patients before and after implementation of the interventions. Conclusion: Having a culturally competent nursing framework on basic Islamic beliefs and practice along with Epic based tools is essential in the ability of nurses to ensure patient satisfaction for Muslim patients.
