Abstract
John Steven McGroarty, twentieth-century Catholic Californian, had a career which was as varied as it was long. Interested in Journalism, poetry, history, politics, and drama, he lived for activity, and for the greater part of his life was not far from the center of it. As one of the most colorful figures of Southern California In the twentieth century, his ideas had as impact of considerable force on the rapidly growing Los Angeles community. His admiration for California's early history and the work of the Franciscans was well known: it was his favorite topic as a lecturer.
His career reflects his personal devotion to both Church and State and serves to illustrate some of the features of California’s twentieth-century history. It is hoped that an examination of the career of John Steven McGroarty and an evaluation of his activities in the areas in which he labored may account in a limited way for his notable popularity.
