Abstract

The present work is a continuation of a group project undertaken by six graduate students. Its aim is to compare the French and Latin editions of the six volumes of Jean Bodin’s Republique. The value of this comparison lies in ascertaining the changes in Bodin’s political, social, and economic ideas after the ten years had elapsed between his first French edition, published in 1576, and his Latin edition, published in 1586.

An author translating his own work is free to make whatever changes emotion, thought, or prejudice might suggest. Just what changes were made by Jean Bodin is the question we have set out to answer in this work.
