Abstract
Since the mid nineteenth century, a number of immigrant groups have settled in Marin County and contributed to its development. Notable among these were the Irish, Chinese and Portuguese. Living in a foreign land, these immigrants maintained their cultural identity through the observance of important traditional holidays. This thesis examines the experiences of these three groups in nineteenth century Marin and demonstrates the importance of cultural celebrations in the formation and preservation of their cultural identity.
