Abstract

This thesis aims to prevent the possible misunderstanding that Sartre’s philosophy is solely pessimistic. It is my position Sartre the individual is not destined to impotence and isolation. Rather, the individual, for Sartre, is ultimately the bearer of significant meaning, an agent of meaningful action, and a being capable of profound solidarity with the other. This is so precisely because the individual has the possibility of choice and with choice comes the possibility for solidarity.
