Abstract
The scope of this study extends from martin Murphy’s emigration from Ireland through his several choices of homesite to the final phase of his life on his ranch Pastoria de las Borregas. The historical background of his time facilitates an understanding of Murphy's life and character as he moved from his home in County Wexford, Ireland, to Canada, Missouri, and California. After six years in Sacramento, he settled in 1850 in the Santa Clara Valley where for thirty-four years he spent his energy developing his rancho which later became the site of Sunnyvale, and in building up the city of San Jose.
