Abstract

Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic, intentionally linked itself with the Queen of Heaven, the Virgin Mary, through artistic imagery such as paintings, sculpture, and architecture. This civic and religious association was a way to protect trade, maintain a stable economy, and be perceived as trustworthy in the eyes of the world. This presentation will reveal how Venice protected its main source of independence; international trade, by fusing the image of the Virgin Mary with that of the Venetian government.
