Abstract

This presentation will focus on the post-colonial notion of the other as an iteration of the broader cultural tendency to make meaning via binary opposition. I will examine the various attempts of characters to resist this reality by creating an alternate space within the dominant culture.

Presenter Biography

Kelly Bowers is a recent graduate of the Master of Arts in Humanities at Dominican University. Her areas of interest include post-colonial theory, gender studies, gothic literature, and science fiction. She lives by the Russian River in Guerneville, California with her husband, three children, and Australian Shepherd puppy.
