Abstract

Writing instruction is an important component of elementary education. This study investigated the effectiveness of the Trait Crate™ writing program in a 5th grade classroom. The program uses picture books to teach each of the six traits of writing. The traits are: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. The sample includes the classroom of the study and a control group. Both groups had twenty-four student participants. Learning to write is important to future communication skills for elementary students and the results of this study suggest that the program was effective in teaching the six traits of writing to 5th graders.
