Abstract
The focus of the study is directed to the use of journal writing in kindergarten classrooms and its influence on building foundational skills for reading and writing. Research was directed at examining literature regarding journal writing with kindergarten students and researcher-conducted interviews with teachers who use journal writing in then- curriculum. This document provides a description of techniques kindergarten teachers use to incorporate journals into the language arts program, including the associated motivational factors that encourages students to enjoy reading and writing. Teachers assessment of then- kindergarten students’ phonemic awareness and concept of print skills are analyzed as part of this work.
