Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine parental reasons for home schooling their children. Participants were parents in a county north of the San Francisco Bay Area who made the decision to home school their children. Parents were asked to participate in an unstructured interview where they discussed their reasons for choosing home schooling.

Literature reveals that parents make this decision based on religion, socialization and academics. Parents, in this analysis, home school their children for academic and social reasons, with academic reasons being the most common.
