Abstract
This study examines the middle school experience for students with attention paid to the feeling of connectedness and disconnectedness and its effect on students’ perception of the worth of their experience. Middle school teachers and counselors were interviewed and the researcher kept anecdotal notes during the study. Data were analyzed to identify common themes throughout the interviews. Results indicated that many of the students who transition from elementary school to middle school experience a period of disorganization, sometimes fear, and a feeling of disconnectedness from their learning and social experience at the middle school.
