Abstract

This study focuses on how teachers adapt Project Based Learning to successfully teach the California State Science Standards in at the elementary school level.

Six teachers with Project Based Learning background responded to a questionnaire of six questions that asked them to describe how they adapted this approach in their classrooms. Two administrators responded to a questionnaire by giving teachers recommendations on how to adapt Project Based Learning to make teaching aligned with the California State Science Standards.

Several teachers presented California State Science Standards to their classes and had the students create projects. Other teachers guided these “student-centered” projects by adding requirements that fit to these Standards. Recommendations from administrators included limiting project options that emphasize State Science Standards, and teaching with a thematic approach, which integrates the learning of State Standards around a theme. Project Based Learning provides the process for thematic teaching. This study was intended to begin the process of inquiry.
