Gina Nahai: Reclaiming Jewish Iranian Identity in the American Diaspora

Living continuously in Iran for over 2700 years, Jews have played an integral role in the history of the country. Frequently understood as a passive minority group, and often marginalized by the Zoroastrian and succeeding Muslim hegemony,, the Jews of Iran are instead portrayed in this book as having had an active role in the development of Iranian history, society, and culture. Examining ancient texts, objects, and art from a wide range of times and places throughout Iranian history, as well as the medieval trade routes along which these would have travelled, The Jews of Iran offers in-depth analysis of the material and visual culture of this community. Additionally, an exploration of modern novels and accounts of Jewish-Iranian women's experiences sheds light on the social history and transformations of the Jews of Iran from the rule of Cyrus the Great (c. 600-530 BCE) to the Iranian Revolution of 1978/9 and onto the present day.

By using the examples of women writers such as Gina Barkhordar Nahai and Dalia Sofer, the implications of fictional representation of the history of the Jews of Iran and the vital importance of communal memory and tradition to this community are drawn out. By examining the representation of identity construction through lenses of religion, gender, and ethnicity, the analysis of these writers' work highlights how the writers undermine the popular imagining and imaging of the Jewish 'other' in an attempt to create a new narrative integrating the Jews of Iran into the idea of what it means to be Iranian. This long view of the Jewish cultural influence on Iran's social, economic, political, and cultural development makes this book a unique contribution to the field of Judeo-Iranian studies and to the study of Iranian history more broadly.

Integrated Pest Management Strategies for Phytoplasma Diseases of Woody Crop Plants: Possibilities and Limitations

Phytoplasmas causing diseases of woody plants in native environments and agricultural systems are responsible for considerably economic and environmental damage. In Central and Southern Europe, phytoplasma diseases of apple (Malus domestica: Apple proliferation, AP) and grapevine (Vitis vinifera: Bois noir, BN and Flavescence dorèe, FD) are widespread and impact quantity and quality of the fruits. The ecology of phytoplasma diseases is complex and involves one or more insect vectors and in some cases alternative host plants. Phytoplasma densities in infected plants and expression of symptoms can vary considerably among seasons, and remission of symptoms occurs frequently. Disease control by pesticide application generally is not very efficient, therefore a polyphasic control strategy using a mix of agronomical, chemical and biological strategies needs to be developed for each disease. In the case of Bois noir e.g., the population density of the vector Hyalesthes obsoletus is related to the presence of its main host plants Urtica dioica and Convulvulus arvensis in the understory of the vineyards, which can be managed by agronomical methods. Application of foliar fertilizer showed no significant effect on BN-infected grapevines. AP-infected apple trees were treated with four bio-active compounds (Acibenzolar-S-Methyl, Harpin protein, Prohexadione-Ca and Cyanamide) over a three-year period, but their effects on symptom expression were only limited and transient.

Teaching Poetry Through Dance

Vivian Delchamps

“Teaching Poetry Through Dance” draws upon the similarities between dance and poetry to recommend inclusive and innovative pedagogical practices. The chapter suggests that all poetry, but especially poetry that engages closely with issues of corporality, can be connected to dance, and that emphasizing this connection encourages students to engage with the written word in original and invigorating ways. Delchamps analyzes poems by writers Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, attesting that such poems take on new meaning when studied alongside videos of dance performances. She further claims that dance teaching methodologies help students learn to study a poem’s form, content, narration, and style. Students think differently about a poem when it is performed; Delchamps therefore recommends kinesthetic, visual, audible, and tactile exercises that work in various teaching environments and for students with diverse learning styles.

Pilgrimage requires a journey. Humans are walkers, traversing the landscape seeking adventure and home. Walking pilgrimages along historic routes and concentrated journeys in a labyrinth all involve circling a centre. Places of natural grandeur have long attracted those undertaking journeys to sites of magic, prophecy, safety, hope and the supernatural. The landscape informs the journey and pilgrims notice things that can only be revealed by walking through that specific landscape. The boundaries between inner and outer landscape become blurred as the pilgrim enters an expanded relationship to the self. Walking engages the body while freeing the mind for deep contemplation and potential transformation. Following a labyrinth, a nature trail, or a saint’s footsteps requires surrendering control and trusting the journey. Walking in a state of focused contemplation while holding a question or an intention of quiet attentiveness is a core pilgrimage practice. A heightened state of receptive self-observation can evoke an almost visceral recognition of one’s own truth, a profound surprise of the potential for reimagining one’s life as a coherent story of meaningful events and cohesive purpose. From the first step across the threshold of the familiar to the last step returning home to where the pilgrim began, we are called to the journey. Circling the centre, whether walking the labyrinth, circumambulating Mount Tamalpais, or following the devotional route of early monks around Iona, orients the pilgrim to a greater understanding of their place and role in the cosmos. In my own awakening to the power of place and the profound longing for fields of sacred landscape, I have come to describe all sickness as homesickness. The journey home is the central quest for wholeness. The land shapes the pilgrim just as centuries of pilgrims shape the land. Contemplative walking is a powerful practice to find one’s way home.

Iowa 2016: The Start of an Unusual Nomination Contest

The rhetoric and political communication of the 2016 Presidential Election was arguably unconventional, partisan, and polarizing—becoming a defining characteristic of the tone and feel of the campaign.
