Abstract
This grant, for group therapy with schizophrenic clients is to be conducted at the Kaufman County Outreach Clinic in Terrell, Texas. There is a need for outpatient therapy because most state hospitals are unable to provide long-term psychotherapy which is often required for stabilization of the schizophrenic client. This grant for preventive outpatient art therapy and family therapy is designed to eliminate the need for any hospitalization. The art therapy group will supply structured creative expression for clients to explore and express their psychotic disorders. The family therapy will center around issues of coping skills, problem solving, educating clients and their families on medication, support services, resources and funding. The Brief Symptoms Inventory(BSI) by Derogatis and the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SAD) will be given as a pre- and post-test to evaluate change. Anticipated results are increased stability of the schizophrenic client within the community, as well as increased functioning of the client within the family.
