Identifying as Transgender: The Occupational Impact

Cristina Cummings, Dominican University of California

Abstract/Description

What does it mean to identify as transgender? According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of transgender is “being a person whose gender identity differs from the sex the person had or was identified at having at birth” (2018). On a surface level, individuals perceive transitioning as involving an abundance of medical treatment and hormones (Planned Parenthood, 2018). Analyzing this transition more in depth reveals how transitioning can mean a number of things such as changing names/preferred pronouns, appearance, or dress (Planned Parenthood, 2018). These changes have a large impact on the transitioning individual’s life as an occupational being. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and identify the occupational impact becoming transgender has on one’s life.
