Bullying in Elementary Schools

Victor Brancati, Dominican University of California

Abstract/Description

Bullying is a term that many people use to signify one person being mean to another for the sake of putting themselves up and the other person down. This has many forms, as it could be physical, emotional, or social. With each of these forms come different challenges and ways of prevention. In elementary schools bullying can happen in various ways and it is important to address that correctly. There have been programs more recently such as the “Stop Bullying” movement, which have helped bring more awareness to this recurring issue. In elementary schools, teachers are at the forefront of creating a class environment where bullying does not occur and having the ability to address it when it does.

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to (1) research teaching and classroom management strategies that prevent bullying and (2) investigate how teachers resolve student-to-student conflict in the classroom. This study addressed two research questions. The first is: How can teachers use classroom management strategies to minimize the bullying in their classrooms? The second is: How do teachers facilitate conflicts between students? Information was collected through researching empirical journals and by observing a third grade elementary school classroom. The researcher hopes to conclude that the teacher is able to have a positive influence on bullying in the classroom through the techniques that they use.
