Elizabeth Ramirez, Dominican University of California

Abstract/Description

My presentation will examine social media influencers as a career and how they are reshaping the marketing world. Companies are now looking to social media influencers to promote their products and services to share with their millions of followers in an instant. A career as a social media influencer is new and the majority of influencers are young adults that can amass up to a six-figure salary though views, brand deals, and branches out to mainstream media. This new career does not require a college education and has now become a popular avenue for success as oppose to attending University. The purpose of this research is to examine the newfound career of being a social media influencer and how they’ve found success. This research will show the impact social media influencers have on a company’s social currency, their impact on society, and their ability to market to their audience effectively. I will explain the definitions of being a social media influencer and how society has shifted the basic means of communication. For my research I have chosen to examine specifically social media influencers who have gained their success through the platforms Instagram, and YouTube. I will also review various scholarly articles regarding my topic and how they helped me in my research, social media success, social currency, etc. For my research I will use the case studies approach to analyze Social Media Influencers as a group and how they affect society today, specifically the marketing world and their influence on their audience.
