Abstract

Many English Language Learners are struggling academically in middle school, reading below grade level. They are challenged in many subjects. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Brain Gym® and Bal-A-Vis- X® exercises on students’ language acquisition and reading ability. Brain Gym® and Bal-A-Vis-X® have been used to increase brain function in a variety of settings. During this study, students engaged in specific exercises, in combination with their regular classroom activities for four weeks. Tests as well as questionnaires were recorded both before and after the study to evaluate any academic growth. The students were middle school Hmong and Hispanic English language learners. Brain Gym® exercises and Bal-A-Vis-X® exercises showed a positive effect on language acquisition in students learning English as a second language. The results of the study showed an increase spelling test scores and improved performance in the classroom.
