Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of student age at entrance to kindergarten in California and the policy, practice, and research issues related to that decision. Questionnaires were mailed to ten teachers with kindergarten through second grade placements. Results indicated that kindergarten and first grade teachers were equally aware of those children who were chronologically older due to being "held out" a year and to the chronologically young children in a given class. This awareness began to diminish among second grade teachers.
