Abstract
The Pediatric Pain Management Service at Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford seeks $39,000 for the establishment of an Art Therapy Program. This money will provide funding for one year.
Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford is a non-profit, state licensed medical facility which provides comprehensive care to children and adolescents throughout Northern California as well as to people from other areas. The art therapy program will provide individual and group therapy to individuals, groups, and families. Our understanding of pain in children and pain management has grown in recent years. The addition of art therapy to the pain management program will provide an additional non-pharmacological intervention intended to alleviate stress and anxiety in addition to pain and provide patients and their families with tools to bring home to manage pain and illness away from the hospital setting.
Art therapy can be used for assessment, communication, and healing. It speaks for those who are non-verbal, provides a safe container for feelings and gives a measure of control to those who feel their lives are out of control Art therapy will be a valuable component to the multi-disciplinary team approach utilized for pain management at Packard Hospital.
