Abstract

What are the similarities and differences between Joseph Stalin’s, and Vladimir Putin’s rise to power? How have their similarities and differences impacted their leadership style with regards to how they governed? Given the similarities between Stalin and Putin one may lead to speculate that the former is a strong influence on the latter. The focus of this thesis is to show how their governing styles came to be based on their background and the political time in which each individual grew up in. Equally important is, how to this day, Stalin’s leadership continues to have an influence on Putin’s decision-making process of eliminating the opposition. By examining the life experiences of both leaders, such as personality traits, rise to power, and how Stalin continues to be a major influence on Putin’s leadership style we are able to better understand how the latter operates as a leader.
