Latino College Student Barriers

Genisis Pantoja, Dominican University of California

Abstract/Description

Latinos faces many struggles whether it may be being an immigrant in the United Sates, not making enough income to provide for their family. One of the major struggles that stand out more in the Latino community is education. Many latino students do not go to college after graduating high school but, for those that do make it as far to college they still continue to struggle. Latino college students struggle because they don’t how to navigate through college and who to ask for help. Their parents probably didn't earn college degrees and therefore haven’t gotten much help in their education because they don’t how to help them if they themselves don't know. In college, the student is on their own and they are expected to know how to navigate through, but they still are in need of guidance. I will tell my personal story and my navigation through college that has led me to where I am right now. I will also be discussing some of the ways that Latino college students can get the help they need through college.
