Abstract/Description

Being physically active is great in many aspects like stress management, coping, or to stay healthy but, being an athlete is different. Being an athlete is being someone who is proficient in their sport(s) through the proper use of various techniques and forms especially in competitive events. Gender roles are the way people act, what they say to express being a boy or a girl, a man or a woman. Gender plays a hand in sports because some sports require more physical contact than others and there seems to be a correlation between gender and sports. There is a different level of involvement in sports that seem to occur due to sex such as male and female dominated sports like football or gymnastics. Sports participation and performance is important because even at a young age, training and being on a team can benefit the individual psychologically and socially. Gender roles

For my capstone project I plan to look at the relationship between gender roles and sports. I want to know whether gender roles play a part in whether males or females participate in sports or if gender roles inhibit individuals from participating. I plan to use surveymonkey to administer my questionnaire to the students about their gender identity and the relationship with sports participation and performance.
